Conclusion

This movie, in regards to Scorsese’s filmography, is unique in it’s style and feel. Initially reluctant to direct, Scorsese eventually agreed to direct after nearly dying from a drug overdose. After this change of outlook, Scorsese came to the realization that boxing can be used as an apt allegory for nearly everything you do in life.

For Scorsese, making movies, doing drugs, and many other struggles became akin to stepping into the ring. Life is a battle, and each time we may not be fighting a physical opponent but rather ourselves. And this message is illustrated in a raw and unfiltered fashion in Raging Bull. It is a gritty and surprisingly human look into a flawed human who spent his life fighting his demons, literally and figuratively
